A Dad Doula?
A Dad Doula?
They say it takes a village to bring a child into the world. Not many would argue with this sentiment, but that does beg the question of who helps that village prepare for the roles they will play? The greatest support an expecting and new mother can rely on often starts in the home with her partner. We spend a great deal of time preparing the new mother for the changes she will undergo and the role she is about to play, but how often do we consider preparing fathers as well? Dou-Bro’z, a groundbreaking service for new fathers is seeking to do just that.
Founded in 2018 and headed by Mr. Patrick Hutchins, Dou-Bro’z is expanding how we look at preparing families for their newest addition. The All The Unexpected Podcast sat down with Mr. Hutchins to discuss how his service came to be and what the future looks like as they expand.
What began as a sort of tongue in cheek joke during a discussion with colleagues in birth work about having Doulas for dads, went from just an idea in Hutchin’s head to a full blown service working with clients in person in the greater Phoenix area and nationwide in the virtual space. Dou-Bro’z offers courses and coaching for fathers during both the pre and postnatal periods. There is an emphasis on the role they play in directly supporting their partners during and after pregnancy. Father’s are given advice on everything from practical tips to alleviate their partner’s stress, to hands on instructions on swaddling and diaper changing. They are a full service organization filling a gap in birthing education.
